A delightful breakfast casserole that reimagines the classic Monte Cristo sandwich, filled with layers of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese soaked in a rich custard.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread (white or brioche)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 pound ham, sliced
  • 1/2 pound turkey, sliced
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
  • Powdered sugar for serving
  • Jam for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange half of the bread slices in a single layer in the bottom of the prepared dish.
  3. Layer the ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese over the bread.
  4. Top with the remaining slices of bread.
  5. Whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt in a mixing bowl until well combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread layers, ensuring everything is soaked well.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight for best results.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven, allow to cool slightly, then serve warm dusted with powdered sugar and accompanied by jam.

Notes

For an extra flavor kick, try adding sautéed onions or bell peppers. Use low-fat milk for a lighter version.
